Study Medicine and Healthcare in New Zealand

In New Zealand, the undergraduate course begins with 1 year of pursuing a Bachelor of Health Sciences. After completing this, you need to take a test to get admitted to the medicine and surgery program that’s known as Bachelor's of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB).

You would take 6 years to graduate where your 6th year would be spent in a hospital as an intern. Post this; you will become a “house officer/surgeon” for 2 years (similar to an intern in USA). During this period you will spend time in various hospitals in different areas & specialties. After these 2 years spent in rotations at various hospitals, you get to pick your specialty and then you can apply to become a senior house officer where you can train more in your selected specialty.

Finally you apply to become a register. Here you need to enter a training programme and study along with your work. Your studies for the registrar programme lasts for 2 years after which you become a general practitioner or specialist.
