Study Medicine and Healthcare in Singapore

Unlike other countries, you do not need to sit for a multitude of exams like USMLE, PLAB or AMC, but you should a graduate and be registered as a generalist or specialist from one of the medical schools recognized by the Singapore Medical Council.

If you are registering as a Generalist, you will need to go through the varying degrees of registration – provisional, conditional and full. If you are registering as a Specialist, you need to obtain the accreditation from the Specialist Accreditation Board (after the above procedure) and if you want to obtain a Post-Graduate Residency training (as a foreign medical graduate) and eventually obtain the Master Of Medicine degree from the prestigious National University of Singapore, you will need to apply to the Division of Graduate Medical Studies (DGMS) and train for 2 to 3 years in an approved hospital and appear for various examinations during the course.

There is no coursework as such in Singapore medical course. You will receive on-the-job training as in the UK. In fact, for some specialties you as a foreign candidate need not even train in Singapore hospitals and take admission to the MMed examinations on the basis of training outside Singapore.

The Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore confers an MBBS degree. You need to have studied and passed the subjects Chemistry and Biology/Physics to be eligible for undergraduate medical studies in Yong Loo Lin.  The American Duke University also has a medical programme based in Singapore, but it follows the North-American model of styling its degree Doctor of Medicine (MD).
