New Zealand, a country with scenic beauty, beautiful mountain views and adventurous water sports, offers globally recognised and high quality courses at affordable prices. And availability of cheap accommodation makes it one of the popular education centres among the students across the globe. To attract more and more students to New Zealand for higher education, their government offers several scholarships for international students.

New Zealand with a cost effective education system and cheap accommodation offers a huge number of courses for international students. The cost for courses differs from institute to institute and subject to subject. To attract more international students and strengthening its educational partnership with other countries, New Zealand offers many international scholarships. A wide variety of scholarships offered to international students in New Zealand are provided by the government, educational institutes, private funding source or foreign governments.

Types of Scholarships

Some of the scholarships provided by the government/ oragnisations for international students in New Zealand include:

Commonwealth scholarship Commonwealth Scholarship is offered by Official Development Assistance (ODA) programme of New Zealand government for students of developing nations to pursue master or doctoral level studies. The scholarships provided to student covers tuition fee, basic living allowance, return airfare, health insurance and some study related expenditure. The scholarship’s length for master and doctorate level is two and four years, respectively. The scholarships are offered for full time courses.

The Commonwealth scholarships are managed by every country’s nominating agency. In India, the nominating agencies are Director General of Indian Council for Cultural Relations and Deputy Educational Adviser of Ministry of Human Resource Development. Commonwealth scholarship awardees can study in University of Canterbury, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Waikato, Massey University, Auckland University of Technology, University of Otago and Lincoln University.

BayerBoost Environmental Scholarship Scheme BayerBoost Environmental Scholarship is offered by a research based global company, BayerBoost to support global environmental projects and increase environmental awareness among the students.

The scholarship of $3,000 to 6,000 is given to students seeking admission in undergraduate environmental studies programme. For BayerBoost Environmental Scholarship, students are required to contact a host organisation for establishment of project.The host organisations for the project are Lincoln University, Plant and Food Research, Massey University, University of Canterbury, etc. The host organisations are responsible for insurance, health, safety and taxation requirements of the students.

New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships (NZIDRS) New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarship (NZIDRS) is offered by New Zealand government for international students seeking admission in full time doctoral degree course. NZIDRS is administered by the Education New Zealand Trust. The scholarship issued for 3 years, covers tuition fee, travel allowance, annual health insurance, monthly living allowance, book and thesis allowance and one-off establishment allowance.

The amount of scholarship depends upon institution and subject..Candidates interested in applying for scholarship, should have average “A” grade in their current education, English proficiency certificate and evidence of contacting relevant department for availability of supervision. Eligible candidates can download application form from official site of the Education New Zealand Trust.

R.H.T. Bates Postgraduate Scholarship R.H.T. Bates Postgraduate scholarship is offered by The Royal Society of New Zealand in memory of Professor Richard Bates FRSNZ for students interested in pursuing Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Physical Sciences and Engineering. The scholarship of $5000 is offered for 1 year.
Students with physical science (chemistry, physics, information and mathematical science) or engineering as main subjects in graduation degree and pursuing post graduation degree are eligible for the scholarship. Students in final year of undergraduate course are not eligible for this scholarship.

New Zealand International Undergraduate Fees Scholarship (NZIUFS) New Zealand International Undergraduate Fees Scholarship (NZIUFS) is offered by New Zealand government to provide financial support to international students seeking admission in full time undergraduate course (3 years). NZIUFS is administered by the Education New Zealand Trust. The scholarship, offered on the basis of merit covers only complete undergraduate tuition fee. Travel expense, insurance and living cost are not included in this scholarship.

Candidates with complete two years of secondary education, less than age of 30 years and TOFEL or IELTS certificate are eligible for the scholarship. Students can apply for NZIUFS through nominating agencies in their country.

NZIUFS is not given for aviation, dental surgery, medicine, optometry and veterinary science course. The awardees of scholarship can apply in Auckland University of Technology, Lincoln University, Massey University, University of Canterbury, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Waikato and University of Otago.

Reserve Bank of New Zealand University Scholarship Reserve Bank of New Zealand University Scholarship is offered by Reserve Bank of New Zealand to honours, masters or PhD. final year students of economics, finance or banking.

The scholarship of $10,000 is paid fortnightly during an academic year. Students with average B+ grade are eligible for the scholarship. Students entering first year of University are not eligible for this scholarship.

The awardees of scholarship are required to work with Reserve Bank of New Zealand for a specific time period after completion of the academic year otherwise they have to repay the given scholarship.

Candidates can apply for Reserve Bank of New Zealand University Scholarship by downloading application form from official website of Reserve Bank. They can submit form with their CV.

Bickerton- Widdowson Trust Memorial Scholarship Bickerton-Widdowson Trust Memorial Scholarship is offered by trustees of the Bickerton-Widdowson Trust to students seeking admission in undergraduate and post graduate Fine Arts course at the University of Canterbury.

Scholarship of $2000 is offered for 1 year to students interested in studying at School of Fine Arts of University of Canterbury. Students can apply for the scholarship by downloading application form from official website of University of Canterbury.

ZESPRI Horticulture International Scholarship Programme ZESPRI Horticulture International Scholarship Programme is offered by ZESPRI International Ltd., the world’s largest marketer of kiwifruit, to students interested in pursuing full time undergraduate degree or diploma course in horticulture and related fields. Scholarship of $3000 is offered for 1 year. Students who have already started course in University or Polytechnic are not eligible for the scholarship.

LEARN Scholarships Livestock Emissions and Abatement Research Network (LEARN) is an international research network established by New Zealand government to improve understanding of greenhouse gas emission from livestock agriculture. The New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre (NZAGRC) offers several scholarships through LEARN to researchers, scientists or technicians of developing nations:

• Technician Award is offered by LEARN to international students enrolled in PhD. course in horticulture, agriculture or forestry in their home country. Students are offered training in tools, equipments and methods used to understand greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture. Scholarship of $20,000 is offered for 6 months to 1 year to students with bachelor degree or 5 years work experience as technician. Students can apply for scholarship by downloading form from the official website of LEARN.
• Post – Doctoral Fellowships are offered by LEARN for students of developing nations who have completed their PhD in five years. The fellowship provides an opportunity to researcher of developing country to work in a research project of New Zealand researcher. The scholarship of $55,000 is offered for 1 to 2 years to candidates who are either employed by government or research centre of their home country. Students can apply for fellowship by downloading application form from official website of LEARN.
• Co- Funded PhD. scholarship is offered by LEARN for international students enrolled to PhD. programme at their home country. The scholarship of $20,000 is offered for 1 to 3 years to PhD. students. Students can apply for scholarship by downloading form from official website of LEARN.
